About Bethlehem Lutheran School
Our Journey of Faith
Our Story
From humble beginnings, a partnership with the Bethlehem Lutheran Church has grown to provide a gospel-centered education for many of God’s young children.
We can trace the roots of Lutheranism in the Kennewick area back to 1904, when a number of Lutheran families, of Norwegian descent, settled on tracts of irrigated farming land north of the Columbia River. Two years later, Lutheran families of German descent settled in the Kennewick valley and were welcomed by the Norwegians and worshiped with them.
Bethlehem Lutheran Church founded the elementary school in 1911, with the enrollment of 16 students, to provide a Christian education for the children of its members. They held their classes in the church building, and Reverend Henry Brockmann, the congregation’s first resident pastor, served as the teacher.
The school has occupied three campuses for over 100 years and moved to the present campus in December of 2011. The school serves the entire Tri-Cities community by providing a high quality, Christ-centered education to students in preschool through the eighth grade.

Why Families Choose BLS
A Message from Our Principal
Families choose Bethlehem Lutheran School for their children for a variety of reasons. Small class size, caring teachers, Christian focus, rigorous and balanced program of studies, and a safe environment usually top the list when asked, “Why BL?” But after they’ve been here for a while, through further conversations with families, I hear many of the same things repeated in different ways. Statements like, “Bethlehem has a great community feel to it”, “Bethlehem feels like family” and “Bethlehem provides an excellent education and a solid Christian foundation.”
The most important part of a child’s education may differ for each parent who walks through our doors, but one thing is always the same: Parents love their children and want the best for them. They want their child to feel loved and accepted, and know that they have an important place within the “BL family.” Our job as educators is to help children become the best versions of the people God created them to be. That begins with loving every child where they are, collaborating with parents, and giving each child what they need to grow through their educational journey.
Will students be in smaller classes, taught with a Christian focus, by the best teachers, with a strong academic foundation for the future? Yes! But most importantly, your children will learn who they are as members of God’s family and build their identity with Him as the focus, knowing He loves them.
I welcome you to visit us and see for yourself what it means for you and your child to be part of the “BL family.”
Blessings,
Eric Haan, Principal
